The Wegner Health Sciences Library, in collaboration with the Sanford School of Medicine and the Sioux Falls Arts Council, is pleased to announce a new Artist-in-Residence exhibition as part of its ongoing Visual Arts Initiatives and Health Humanities programming. These efforts aim to enrich medical and health sciences education by integrating thought-provoking visual art into teaching and learning environments.
The program highlights the role of the arts in fostering empathy, understanding and compassion among future physicians and healthcare professionals. Artwork is displayed in the Mary Nettleman, M.D. Classroom, a large, dedicated space within the library established in February 2021 to support interdisciplinary learning.
The 2025–2026 Artist-in-Residence, Judith Peterson, is a visual artist whose work spans ink, photography, monoprint and the intricate art of origami. Drawn to the tactile, hand-to-paper process of folding, Peterson explores themes of simplicity, transformation and mindfulness. She began practicing origami while in medical school and continues today as a certified instructor with the Nippon Origami Association. In addition to her artistic work, Peterson is a practicing physician at Yankton Medical Clinic and faculty member at the Sanford School of Medicine.
