From Regional Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Derek Fletcher and James Wolner, Dakota Spotlight: Call Me Shelly is a documentary film inspired by the true crime podcast Dakota Spotlight. Through new interviews, archival materials, and original reporting, the film explores the 1994 disappearance of Michele “Shelly” Julson from Bismarck, North Dakota, revisiting a case that continues to resonate throughout the region more than 30 years later. The screening will be followed by a live discussion and audience Q&A with the filmmakers.

The Film Festival is South Dakota’s local festival dedicated to showcasing films from around the world that highlight the talents of people with physical and developmental disabilities. Our mission is to create meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities and rare diseases to share their stories, express their creativity, and be celebrated on the BIG screen. The festival empowers creators to lead the storytelling process, whether in front of or behind the camera, giving them a platform that is often unavailable in traditional media.
